How sometimes we touch other people’s life…

A lady comes to see me in the emergency room with tears in her eyes. I have just hospitalized her mother in palliative care and I took the time to call her to tell her the news, her mother’s decision, her condition, her expected death soon. So she went to her bedside.

She told me:

I recognized you.
Did you?
You have changed my life.
How did I change your life?
Seven years ago, I was in the emergency room, my arms were full of holes, I was a drug addict. You sat down next to me, you took my hand, you looked me in the eyes and you asked me “What can I do for you”. I went into rehab because of you… I just wanted to say thank you.

I take her in my arms and hold her tight. I let her go and I go see another patient. For a few moments there is a certain lightness in my walk and in my heart.

Changing people’s lives is sometimes done with small, simple gestures…
