On roasting coffee at home

Sunday morning’s simple joy is…

Roasting coffee.

I love experimenting in the kitchen.

Two years ago, i roasted coffee in the oven to make christmas gifts but managing the smoke turned out to be a challenge.

This spring, i looked into buying a roasting machine but before spending $$$ i thought i would try simpler alternative.

So this is my batch of home ironcast pan roasted coffee.

To see if it is any good, me and Edith made a blind smell and taste test to compare it with Starbuck espresso dark roast beans.

The aromas of the freshly roasted beans are much more complex. This is to be expected. The difference is more subtle once the beans are grinded. Although my coffee was darker than Starbuck’s, it’s bitterness was significantly less but this can be just caused by the type and origin of the grain.

Overall, home roasted coffee compares favorably to a coffee from a reputable coffee company.

For those interested, just cook on low to medium heat until desired color. Stirr regularly with a metal whisk for an even roast. Takes 15-20 minutes. Expect a lot of smoke and some popping sounds. The ironcast pan accumulates a lot of heat so remove early because cooking will continue for a few minutes.
