There is so much literature on empathy and compassion that I don’t have enough hours in my life to read it all. I have no new idea to contribute to this body of knowledge.
The main challenge in the modern world is not the lack of knowledge or information; it is the lack of understanding. Knowing something good is nice, but letting that knowledge change our lives, change us, and influence our actions is the key to a meaningful life.
We tend to talk a lot and do little. I am not immune to this. Just have a look at my blog, it is filled with ideas while I am really just a work in progress. LOL.
To inspire people, we don’t need more information; we need good stories.
Let me take you on a short imaginary moment. Let’s find, in your memory, an image that looks like this.
“You come home after a tough day at work, and you are exhausted, worried, and a bit frustrated about a situation at work. When you enter your house, your partner sees you and…”
Do you get the idea? Did you get this situation in your head? Pretty typical for adults who live together in the modern world. Let’s unfold that story.
“Your partner sees you and says either of these phrases:
1- Can you help me fix dinner? She hands you the knife and expects you to peel and cut potatoes.
2- Oh… I guess you had a tough day at work; you seem exhausted… she comes over and hugs you. She asks: Do you want to talk about it? “
Take the time to think about your reactions to both options and answer these questions.
How complicated, time-consuming, and expensive is number #2 for your partner? Did she fix anything and resolve your issues? What did she provide? What was your reaction?
Once you feel recognized and seen, how easier will it be to help your partner fix dinner?
What is the impact of knowing someone is there for you, sharing your joy, supporting you, and holding you with empathy in any struggle, big or small?
Having found your answers, act on them for your partner and the people around you.
Thank you.
